Melissa Gatter

MPhil, Middle Eastern Studies

Melissa received her BA from the University of Chicago in International Studies, Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, and Human Rights in 2015. During this time she completed studies in Jerusalem and research and humanitarian work in Jordan. Melissa's senior thesis focused on questions of identity expression, national memory, and the idea of return among Palestinian camp refugees and Iraqi urban refugees in Amman, Jordan. Her current research continues to explore these questions through a focus on Syrian refugees in Jordan's Za'atari refugee camp. She is interested in understanding how the Syrian refugee from Dar'a, where the Syrian revolution originated, views the role of the Dar'awi in the future of Syria and changing notions of Syrianness.
